The standard position to test grip strength is for the hand dynamometer to be in the second position. Do not allow patient to rest device on any surface when gripping. For more detailed instructions, please visit the Liver Frailty Index® Instructions page. × Instruction for Chair Stand This is the time that it takes a patient to stand up and sit down in a chair 5 times without using their arms. Arms should be folded across the chest. Start the timer when they first rise out of the chair and stop it when they are standing after the fifth chair rise. If the patient cannot complete all 5 chair stands in 60 seconds, enter 0 for the time. For more detailed instructions, please visit the Liver Frailty Index® Instructions page. × Instruction for Balance This is tested in 3 positions for 10 seconds each. For each position, start the timer when the patient’s feet are in the correct pose and they have let go of any support. If they catch themselves, stop the timer, remind them that they need to hold the whole ten seconds for it to count, and ask them if they want to try again. If they don’t complete the whole ten seconds, record the time in seconds to one decimal place. If they can hold for ten seconds in position, record ten as the time and move to the next pose.
